Resting Piece

Friends of mine knows that I’m a pretty good sleeper. In fact I can take a nap pretty much everywhere and in any situation.

So I wanted not only to sleep well, in a nice and comfy bed, but also to take a power nap whenever I want!

The Couch

I didn’t choose a fixed bed, because I wanted to have free space during the day. I also wanted to be able to invite friends and whoever might come by without any issues, and with no need to invite them into my bed…

The couch can handle 3 persons with no problems, I can add an extra fishing seat if it is needed.

The big part of the couch has a backrest with a really slight slope, as it is my working seat. Whereas the backrest on the rear is more tilted, so it provide more of a chilling space, looking at the exterior.

I do my daily naps in there, lying on the long part of the couch, just adding a pillow for my head.

Couch to Bed

Before I present you my bed, I want to tell a little about how I transform my couch for sleeping at night. In fact the backrests of the couch combine themself to make the conversion.

The backrests are held in place thanks to 3Dprinted parts. It does a really nice job at keeping them in place while driving, but it is really easy to get them off. Just lift them and they are free!

The backrest on the rear of the Van is a bit special, I can unfold it to make some sort of table. That way it add an extra table space when I want to expand my worktop.

This “table” can be put on the floor sideway. I can then put the other backrest ont it, this one is just a simple board.

I just then rearrange the couch’s mattresses and I got my bed!

The whole conversion take me less than one minute.

The Bed

My 3 places couch can transform into a 130cm*190cm bed, with a 10cm mattress in high resilience polyurethane foam. I cut it myself to fit. I’m glad I’ve done it, because my old futton gave me some back pain after a while.

While it is not a king size, it is definitely enough for me, and enough for two persons.

Even if there is proximity when sleeping with someone, you can easily avoid touching each other without issue.

The thing is, because of the space taken by the baskrests, you can’t imagine I’ve got a bed that big!

The Hammock

That was my plan from the beginning!

I added two fixations for hanging a hammock in the van. This has to be done at the start because I had to reinforce the metal sheet for it to bear my body weight.

I tore the hammock ready to hang, under the rear of the couch, so it take 30 seconds to add it!

It is really usefull, in fact

  • Really nice when I have no flat space to park my van. The side tilting has no consequence on the comfort of the hammock, whereas it is a pain when sleeping in the couch or in the bed!
  • Cool when it is warm! Because of the lightness of the fabric it is made of, it is really a nice place to take a nap in hot weather, you don’t sweat so much.
  • Extra sleeping space! It is not really ideal, but it is high enough so you can fit a person in there while two persons sleep in the bed! Nice when you got an extra friend with nowhere to sleep.

…Going to take a nap

That’s all folks, I’m going to take a nap!

While I’m resting from making this post, you can check the other parts of my Van Presentation to see if there is some more inspiration for your future Van build!
